This valley lies between the Old City of Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives, and offers the visitor a strange, rough landscape, characterized by the bare, stony hills dotted by a few olive trees and sparse bushes.

It was the site of some episodes narrated in the Gospels, and is interesting particularly for the presence of several rock tombs of an architectural type which, although they are falsely called Tombs of the Prophets, unmistakably reveals their Hellenistic origin.

The tomb known as the Pillar of Absalom, with its cone-shaped roof, the Tomb of Jehoshaphat, that of St. Zacharia, in the shape of a pyramid, and that of St. James should also be mentioned.

Jesus (pbuh) crossed Valley of the Kidron many times, including on the evening of Holy Thursday when he went with his disciples to Gethsemane. According to local tradition, the Kidron will be the site of the Last Judgement. This belief lead to the creation of cemeteries in Valley of the Kidron for Christians, Muslims and Jews alike.
